Job Description Summary

The Lab Technician I will report to the Quality Manager. Lab Technician I is responsible for following Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and safety policies, ensuring that assigned testing and inspection is completed throughout their shift, communicating with operations departments on food safety and quality expectations, and escalating issues as they arise.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the plant using both core/non-core skills along with common knowledge to troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during production/facility safely.
  • Performs all tasks in a manner which is safe.
  • Be aware of the plants GMP and PPE policies and understand their importance in the plant’s production.
  • Work closely with all departments to educate and enforce the policies, as well as participate in GMP discussions during transition meetings and Huddles.
  • Be knowledgeable of all the lab safety policies and be able to locate and train others on safe practices necessary for the lab and the chemicals used for daily testing.
  • Be proficient in the everyday testing associated with analytical aspect of lab as well as those tasks dedicated to the production floor.
  • Complete tests associated with quality control points as well as critical control points defined in the HACCP & Quality Plan. Daily tests completed by the technicians includes pH testing, total acidity, butterfat extractions, total solids testing, and verification of ingredient addition.
  • Operate and understand the basic knowledge of lab equipment.
  • Participate in the plant’s sanitation program through inspecting packaging production line equipment prior to start-up and using the equipment for ATP testing to verify proper CIP and sanitation of equipment, and release for use as appropriate.
  • Complete hourly line inspection, which evaluates packaged product for packaging, label, case, and code quality
  • Responsible for inputting data into Redzone accurately and adequately.
  • Must have basic computer knowledge and properly make use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and their email.
  • Responsible for an area within the lab as part of the 5S Program.
  • Maintain all supplies in their stations, as well as be proficient in requesting quotes from vendors to replenish supplies.
  • Additional tasks assigned by the QA Lead or manager must be completed to the appropriate skill level. Professionalism and respect for peers and leadership are mandatory for this role.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Food Safety, or Chemistry preferred.
  • Proven experience (typically 1+ years) in quality assurance or quality control, preferred with a minimum of manufacturing experience, highly recommended.
  • Be able to follow instructions, read and understand equipment manuals and procedures.
  • Familiarity with quality management systems (QMS), ISO standards, or other industry-specific quality standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members, management, and other departments.
